Today is our beta launch date and we are so excited to be opening our doors at 3pm PST. We didn't think the energy could get any better, but then we got a group call from one of our beloved artists, Matthew Reid. We took the opportunity to interview him for our artist feature. Matthew's playful yet humble personality is enough to make anyone's day. We'd love to share a bit of that with you. Here's a bit of what's behind the Matthew's work.
KIH: What is your first memory as an artist?
MR: "It is hard to say. It seems like most of us enjoy creating, making and building as children. My first memory would probably be coloring with my brother when we were very young."
KIH: What is your creative process?
MR: "Opening a notebook, or sometimes even knowing when to close a notebook. There is so much beauty in everything, all around, always. Too often i get so caught up in thoughts, that sometimes putting down the pencil and simply sitting on a bench or riding the subway can be the most inspiring experience."
KIH: What was your first medium?
MR: "Crayons and construction paper (maybe only because they have the most nostalgic scents)."
KIH: What is your favorite medium?
MR: "Water colour (although i have much to learn)"
KIH: What is your favorite color right now?
MR: "Sage green"
KIH: What common threads do you find show up in your work?
MR: I've never really thought of it. A great deal of inspiration comes from literature, more specifically, symbolism and
metaphor. Although just representational practices, they seem to exist on many levels in each piece.
KIH: Tell us about your first show?
MR: A group show in 2008. There is not much to tell.
KIH: Where do you do most of your work?
MR: Everywhere. i try to keep a small notebook in my pocket.
