Kess InHouse : Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get your start as an artist?

Suzanne Carter : I am a digital artist and designer. I love photoshop and taking old images and re-shaping them into something new. I bought an iMac about 6 years ago and put away my paint brushes and canvas’ for awhile. i hope to get them back out in another season. I am mum to 6 amazing kids from 25 down to 12 years old and I am married to my best friend, 28 years this year. We live down under in NZ

KIH : What is your first memory as an artist?

SC : Being a small girl and colouring in and loving to draw and paint, and somewhere in those years losing confidence that I could create. Burying it all until my late 30’s when I discovered I actually could be creative and enjoyed it.

KIH : What is your creative process?

SC : My creative process is pretty spontaneous I usually start with an image and just play around with it, adding more images and experimenting in photoshop. Cropping, rotating, and layering the image until I get the effect I want. It kind of evolves organically most of the time.

KIH : What is your favorite part of the creative process?

SC : Getting past the ugh stage, the part of the process where it just looks bad and doesn’t feel redeemable. Once I get past that, its great!

KIH : What common threads do you find show up in your artwork?

SC : I love space and nebulas and they often find their way into my work.  Vintage elements often show up, as I love to repurpose old images and make them into something new.

KIH : What is your favorite piece? How did you develop the composition?

SC : A current piece I love is called Larry & Fred, it is just a fun and slightly strange artwork of two giraffes in space.

KIH : What is your work space like?

SC : Minimal and messy all at the same time. Most of my work is done at my iMac in just a small corner of our busy living area. With 6 kids and all of their friends our house is like Grand Central Railway Station! One day I dream of having my own space!

KIH : What inspires you?

SC : I am inspired by my faith in God, my husband and my children and by the beauty of creation. I am inspired by men and women who live courageous and brave lives.

KIH : What artists inspire you to create your artwork?

SC : I love so many genres of art, but especially digital artists like Katrin Weltz-Stein. I love traditional artists like Monet.
